Here are several helpful quotations from the book by the
above title by Karl Barth. I will restrain myself from
commenting. p.41 "the theme of the Bible is...above all
...His relation to man." The mistake was made to think
"that only one message can be heard...that of an immediate
forgiveness of sins...."p.43. Another mistake: if the usual
problem is thought to make man great at the cost of God,
the other extreme is "to make GOD great...at the cost of
MAN?" "What if the new hymn to the majesty of God should be
a...confirmation of the hopelessness of all human activity?"
p.45. The "theme of the Bible is" "...God's TOGETHERNESS
with man. Who God is and what He is in His deity He proves
and reveals not in a vacuum as a divine being-for-Himself,
but precisely...that He exists, speaks, and acts as the
PARTNER of man...as the absolutely superiour partner."p.45
"It is the deity which as such also has the character of
humanity."p.46 "It is precisely God's DEITY which, rightly
understood, includes his HUMANITY." Okay, just one comment.
When people sin they are NOT acting as HUMANS! They are not
reflecting the image of God. When one sins he is speaking
blasphemy if he says, "I'm just human!" Only FALLEN human
nature is sinful. To be "conformed to the image of Christ"
is to then become (truly) HUMAN! That's what needs to be
cleared up and understood. "Made in the image" means we
reflect humanity- the humanity of God! That's what MAKES us
"human". As FALLEN, we are not yet truly human.
