While I'm on that, let me add: Ortega y Gassett says, after
expounding on the fact that you can have "no culture where
there is no acceptance of final intellectual positions to
which a dispute may be referred."- "Barbarism is the absence
of standards to which appeal can be made." I submit to you
that that has been my observation of Protestantism in over
50 years of full-time study and concern. Granted, Rome is
the cause of the problem; but Protestantism is not the
answer. It only compounds the problem, and blinds everyone's
eyes to the real issue. A "democracy" with no recourse to a
final authority- no possibility of consensus- is not democracy,
but anarchy. As Lincoln said, "A house divided against itself
cannot stand." Is then, the Protestant Principle- the "Bible
alone"- the cause of religious and social barbarism? Perhaps
a brilliant coup by Satan? Makes one wonder.
