In my seminary study of Genesis and the "imago dei"- the image
of God- we studied the various views maintained as to what the
"image" might be. We'll keep this simple and general. Some
theologies (RC, Luth., Reformed, etc.), speculations suggested
it was reason, holiness, capacity for fellowhip with God, etc.
We never spent much time pondering the implications of all
these ideas. Today this amazes me. This is where the rubber
hits the "road". One got the impression that either 1) they
really were unsure, or 2) it was unimportant, or 3) our sect
had it right, so forget the others, or 4) pick one you like.
But, dear friends, this is the heart of the Gospel. It's the
"bottom-line". It doesn't tell us what we are so much as it
virtually defines God himself! That, they told us, is spelled
out somewhere else. I don't think so. In short, it suggests
that the "glory" of God is "humanity". If this shocks you, it
only shows how far we have fallen- in our fallenness. Salvation
is the reclamation of our full humanity; to be human like
Christ!
