You're right about the split between what Jesus/God himself tells us
about himself and the picture of an angry God. I've learned the hard
way not to see God in the bad events of our lives but to remember this
is a fallen world because of the free decisions we human beings make.
Love is a choice we make to either move toward the light, love, and
life of God or depart. Satan didn't stop creating doubts about God's
goodness when A&Eve fell. We are still tempted to see God as "judgmental"
rather than rescuing. In the process we not only confuse ourselves, but
we mislead the world. There's a big difference between universalism- the
idea that everyone will be saved- and the belief that hell is a personal
choice. And, of course God is extremely angry against sin- but not
against us who are the victims of sin! "God sent not ...into the world to
condemn the world, but ...might be saved." Unfortunately, the teaching
of too many Christians gives a different impression.
