The idea of "wrath" suggests to us an angry mind.
It raises troubling pictures of God; as though he
had nothing better to do than be perpetually enraged
and "ticked-off" with wicked sinners. I'm not being
flip. That's the impression millions of people have
lived with over many centuries. And, often, it's the
picture conveyed by the word "sovereignty". So, if
you want to get "forgiven", God must first be paid-
off, compensated, appeased, satisfied. Let me stress
at this point that there are many metaphors and
analogies in the Bible, and that we can only think in
ideas that are common to us as human beings. In short,
many of our terms are anthropomorphic. It is a common
practice in pagan religions, but we do it too. That
simply means we tend to ascribe human traits to God.
It's extremely important to be aware of this, since
it can be very misleading. In short, your picture of
God may only be a caricature, an unfortunate cartoon!
