Do you remember the boy who came home from school all
excited because, as he told his mother, he just learned
he'd been speaking narrative all his life and never knew
it! Metaphysics is like "narrative". It's also like the
weather: "Whether it rain, or whether it snow, we shall
have weather, whether or no." To be a sensient human
being is to think in "metaphysics" and probably not know
it. One thinks of the importance of history- once he's
been around a while, and when he knows some. But try to
interest the average child in history! That old dry as
dust stuff! It sometimes occurs to me that one ought to
practice a certain amount of disgression in the dissemina-
tion of valuable information at one's disposal. Or, as
Christ would have it: "Don't cast your pearls before swine
lest they turn and rend you." Don't you just hate to be
rended? In other words, unless someone is willing to spend
some time critically analyzing his personal spin on things
it doesn't pay to waste your time trying to explain "heavy"
stuff. I'm sure you know what I mean. Until they do, they'll
never have a clue what you're talking about. C.S. Lewis tells
about the lady who wasn't the least bit concerned about the
impending bread shortage. She said the lack of bread wouldn't
affect her family. They always ate toast. Metaphysics is just
trying to understand where it all came from and what it's all
about. For the curious it's worth a little time and effort.
