weltschmerz, evolution, and victory

Weltschmerz is the German word for world-weariness. It makes us
think of anomie (no governance/direction) - aimlessness, meaning-
lessness, insecurity; or just sick and tired and disappointed with
life in general. Why does the universe, reality, per se, sometimes
(at least) feel confusing, restrictive, oppressive; even when things
appear okay? Nothing, I think, seems to describe better our sense of
fallenness. In the 60's much was made of the idea of "lostness".
Unconsciously, we are oppressed by our "mortality", our sense of
the inevitability of our going out of existence ("business"?); and
consequently the pointlessness of going on. I don't mean on to dwell
on the all-too-familiar sense of alienation, anxiety, phobias, threat,
etc. No, but to point out our awareness of evil- of nature as "Fallen".
That, in fact, would explain a lot. It's not just us. It's bigger than us.
That realization gives us hope; in fact that there is a point!
Intuitively, we then surmise, there is a certain absurdity to attributing
all this to the meaninglessness of Darwinian "evolution". What happens to
us "matters"! Goodness is real! Evil is real (but only as a distortion and
departure from goodness)! Our lives do have meaning! We are then caught
up in the swirling vortex of a cosmic struggle- but we are alive and moving
toward a great victory. We are, then, not victims only, but players in a
great drama. Life is always good, and the world is good. However, it is
fallen- but ONLY temporarily! As Nellas says, "the great tragedy of the
Fall is only a small incident in time." Reality is not about death and
dying- but about life and living! Creation has better things in mind. Hang
in there!
